How to sleep better: The best sleeping direction in both hemispheres according to Vastu and Yoga

08/10/2026

Perhaps you have wondered at some point how to sleep better. Especially if you’ve woken up more than once feeling tired, heavy, or as though you haven’t rested at all, despite getting a full eight hours of sleep. Does that sound familiar?

We often attribute insomnia or a lack of restorative sleep to everyday stress, excessive screen time, diet, menopause or the quality of our mattress. And I am not saying these factors aren’t important. However, another highly relevant factor often goes unnoticed, yet influences how our nervous system responds throughout the night: the direction we position our head when we sleep.

The ancient tradition of Vastu shastra, in connection with the wisdom of Yoga, recognises that our rest is in constant dialogue with the electromagnetic environment of the planet.

Your body as a magnet: the internal cardinal points

At the end of the sixteenth century, the British physicist William Gilbert demonstrated that the Earth acts as a giant magnet with its own magnetic poles. What not everyone knows is that, according to the teachings of Yoga transmitted by masters such as Paramahansa Yogananda, the human body also has its own inner cardinal poles.

  • The top of the head acts as one specific pole.
  • The base of the spinal cord represents its counterpart.

When we lie down for hours, these bodily polarities come into direct contact with the Earth’s magnetism. According to the basic principle of magnetic physics, like poles repel one another while opposite poles attract.

If we don’t sleep in the right direction, these forces come into conflict, the nervous system experiences a subtle but constant tension that can make it more difficult to enter the deepest and most restorative stages of sleep. This changes depending on where you are.

The hemispheric dilemma: why is there so much confusion?

Many people ask me what the best direction to sleep in is, and the answer actually depends on which hemisphere you are in. If you have ever researched the orientation of your bed, you have probably come across contradictory advice: some sources state categorically that you should never sleep with your head facing North, while others recommend exactly the opposite.

Who is right?

The answer depends on where you are on the planet. The dynamic between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres is not symmetrical because of the way magnetic polarity operates in each region. What may be detrimental to sleep in Europe or North America can behave quite differently in the Southern Hemisphere.

There is also a universally harmonious orientation linked to the Earth’s rotation, as well as important environmental exceptions — such as topography, proximity to the sea, and so on — that can alter the energetic configuration of your bedroom.

The best orientation for your bed

To understand this in detail:

  1. How exactly the poles of your head interact with each cardinal direction.
  2. Which orientation is recommended if you live in the Northern Hemisphere compared with the Southern Hemisphere.
  3. Why one particular direction can be beneficial anywhere in the world.
  4. Which environmental factors you should look out for before moving your furniture.

I invite you to watch the full visual explanation in my video:

Orientation matters — and I’ll explain why — but it isn’t the whole answer.

Let me explain. As you saw in the video, your bed’s orientation plays a major role in sleep quality. But it would be a mistake to think that simply positioning your head in the right direction is enough to completely transform your sleeping experience. Other factors matter too, like bedroom layout and certain geobiological conditions, but I won’t go into those right now, since that would take me off the main topic: your sleeping direction.

Other factors also affect, such as the room layout or certain geobiological conditions, but I won’t cover them here because would take us away from the main topic of this article: orienting your bed correctly.

When it comes to sleeping better, the design of your bedroom also plays an important role, and there are many other factors involved: the layout of the space, the position of the bedroom’s main door in relation to the bed, the orientation of the bed, the location of doors and windows, materials, lighting, colours… and so on.

To help you put this into practice, I have created The Ultimate Guide to Improving Your Bedroom and Your Sleep. In it, you will find the main Vastu Shastra principles for transforming your bedroom into a more harmonious space that supports restful sleep, without demolition.

You can download it for free here and start applying these principles in your own bedroom.

And if you have any questions, just let me know 🙂

Sending you a big hug, and wishing you a restful night.
With light and love,
